Keep Your Property Safe This Winter with These Simple Tips

As the colder months approach and temperatures begin to drop across the UK, we wanted to share some timely advice to help protect your property from potential damage caused by freezing weather.

Every winter, we see an increase in cases where frozen or burst water pipes lead to significant water damage — something that can often be prevented with a few simple precautions. This is especially important for properties that may be vacant or unoccupied for any length of time.

Here are a few practical steps to help safeguard your home or investment:

  1. Insulate Exposed Pipes
  2. Ensure that all external water pipes, loft pipes, and those in unheated areas (like garages, basements, and outbuildings) are properly lagged with insulation sleeves or foam pipe covers.
  3. Keep the Heating On (Even Low)
  4. Set your heating to come on at a low temperature, ideally around 12–15°C, especially if the property will be empty. This helps maintain a steady temperature and prevents pipes from freezing.
  5. Shut Off the Water Supply if Vacant
  6. If your property will be unoccupied for an extended period, turn off the water supply at the stopcock and drain the system down to prevent standing water from freezing in the pipes.
  7. Check Lagging and Stopcocks
  8. Make sure you know where your main stopcock is located and that it’s easy to access. Check insulation regularly for wear or gaps.
  9. Inspect Regularly or Arrange a Check-In
  10. If possible, visit the property periodically during cold spells or arrange for someone local to check that everything remains in good order.

Taking these steps can save you from costly repairs and unnecessary stress during the winter months.
